Btu Ac Answers
We need an a/c unit for our church, we are looking at one with a 9.7 energy rating. Is this good or bad? thnx?
Q. We are looking at a Frigidaire unit with a 9.7 E'ER rating. I don't know if this is good or bad. I don't want to buy an energy hog, but I can't find anything definite on ratings. There's another with a 10.7, but don't know if it's worth the price difference. Thanks for your help.

A. I answered a recent question about the value of seer ratings. In that question a change from 13 to 14 SEER rating was relatively small each season. To my knowledge there is no E'ER rating for AC units. You might find BTUH (BTU (a heat and cooling measure) per hour, EER energy effency rating determined at 50% relative humidity with 95 deg outside and achieving 80 deg inside. and SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio. From the numbers you are quoting I would say you are looking at window units if it is actually a SEER rating. Ductless split units would have higher SEER ratings. I have seen these as high as 21. The worst units have a rating around 6. The average seems to be around 10 to 13. The second website below has a chart where you… [cont.]

Using an adapter- Air Conditioner plug wrong type.?
Q. Using an adapter plug for an Air Conditioner? If the wall has a 230 volt 8.6 AMP recepticle can I use an adapter plug? My new in wall 12, 000 BTU AC has a standard 115 Volt 12.0 Amp male plug. It's actually a smaller unit then what was there. Will it only draw the volts/amps it needs? It's not like I am going larger. Also, I am too far from the wall outlet to use the standard outlet- I would have to to use an extension cord.

A. No, you are going to have to rewire and change the breaker and receptacle. Any other solution will not be to code and can really cause a lot of problems. When you decide to sell your house, or God forbid there is a fire that code violation will bite you in the ... , Ya' know. Also the extension cord thing is a really bad idea, you're better off relocating your receptacle or replacing the power cord of the unit with a longer one of the same rating, depending on how far you have to reach.

Are Portable Air Conditioners Susceptible to Mold?
Q. All air conditioning--window, central, no matter--makes me ill. Given that, my window air conditioner makes life unbearable. I wake up feeling like a truck ran over me and have bad nightmares...so thank God I live in a northern part of the U.S. I literally douse the two-year-old 5000 BTU every autumn to get as much dirt out of it as I can. I then tip the unit in every direction for over a month, during the heating season. Nevertheless, the smell of mold/mildew every year (when the condenser powers down) is very noticeable. Do portable air conditioners develop as much mold as window air conditioners, and are certain brands easier to clean than others? Thank you.

A. It's possible if you don't regularly clean your portable ac or it's filters. Depending on how often you use it you may need to clean it at least once a month(at least your filters). This will not only help against mold, but will also help your portable air conditioner work more efficiently.

A. What you're plugging into it is a moot point. The breakers are limited at 20 amps so you cannot draw more than that through each circuit without popping a breaker, so just try and evenly distribute your appliances across the 4 circuits. As for wire gauge, a 20-amp breaker should use 12 gauge wire. Any smaller gauge than that and the wire will overheat and pose a fire hazard. Here's a chart: 14 gauge = 15 amp max 12 gauge = 20 amp max 10 gauge = 30 amp max 8 gauge = 40 amp max 6 gauge = 65 amp max I believe that chart assumes solid copper wiring. Copper is at a premium these days, so expect it cost a little. Some hardware stores are even locking their wiring in cages now to prevent theft. Amps are simply watts divided by volts. For example,… [cont.]

i want to buy an AC for 10/10 ft room, with high energy saver, reasonable price after sales good service.suggst?
Q. Air conditioner which will have less power consumption, i.e. the electricity expenses will be reasonable. is split or window ac suitable for this? the machine cost may be little higher than general ac cost, but the maintenance cost should be less.i have seen than hitachi is best for this, but would like to know which type to buy, window/split, and whatever u suggest, so give the model name or number for my convenience. thanks a lot for stopping on my query... may god bless u and ur family...

A. I used to work for Home Depot, and we sold LG and Maytag window unit ACs. The 5000 BTU would be more than enough for the 10X10 ft room, and if the window is in direct sunlight, up it to the 6000 BTU. Both use 110V and 15Amps. Be sure to have a dedicated circuit though, because any other outlets in that circuit, if used when the AC is on, like a vacuum or so, will most likely trip the breaker. Look on the book for a blue logo saying "Energy Star" because it'll save you money on your utility bill. Also, if you are unsure if the unit will fit in your window, measure your window, and then when you to to Home Depot, there should be a sheet, that has the specifications on it. It'll tell you the voltage, the amperage, the square footage… [cont.]
